Durga Puja festival is celebrated every year in the month of September/October and lasts for five days. It is one of the most popular festivals of the Bengalis. The festival is dedicated to the goddess of power “Mother Durga”, also known as Shakti. Durga Puja festival celebrates the victory of Durga Ma over the demon king, Mahishasura. It is celebrated throughout the state of West Bengal with full fervor. A number of rituals are performed during Durga Puja festival, which has to be strictly adhered to. The Puja starts on the day of Sashthi and the successive days are known as Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and Dashami or Bijoya Dashami. Dashami is the last day of the festival, on which the idol of Durga Ma is immersed in the river or sea. Dressing up, socializing with friends, family and relatives, visiting the pandals, eating mouthwatering food and dancing to the beats of drums represent the Durga Puja of Kolkata. In Kolkata, Durga Puja Festival witnesses setting up of the stalls in almost each and every locality. The whole city comes to life at the time of the festival and wears a festive look.
