Event Profile
Pous Mela is a grand event organized during the last week of the month of December in West Bengal. The first Poush Mela was held on 21st December, 1895 at Shantiniketan. The festival aims at bridging the gap between different communities of the state. This mission is carried out by the trust founded by Maharishi Debendranath Tagore who had realized the problem of disintegration in the community.
In the past, Pous Mela was celebrated with cultural fusion of different communities of the society. The fair provided an opportunity of discourses and social interaction among various communities. Today, the Poush Mela attracts a huge population of merchandisers who come for selling consumer goods and other items. It is a meeting point for urban conglomerates and rural masses to exchange their views. The Pous Mela still retains some of its ancient attributes. The fair commences with the morning prayers at the campus of Visva Bharati University. People from rural and urban areas, and from different faiths, visit the fair. Songs are sung by the popular Baul singers during the Poush Mela.
