Surely, mother's day is not an alien concept for you. Celebrated each year on the second Sunday of every May, it is a day earmarked to celebrate the greatness of mothers across the world. This magnificent breed of mommies holds the reins of our lives, and our lives, though ostensibly independent, are inextricably intertwined with theirs. Being a mother to a child calls for oodles of patience, endurance, selflessness and sacrifice, which usually is done uncomplainingly by mothers. Not all countries celebrate mother's day on the same date. It is celebrated in different countries on various days of the year as a number of origins are attributed to this occasion. One school of thought holds the view that mother's day emerged from a custom of worshipping mothers in ancient Greece. Even the Romans celebrated 'Matronalia', a festival dedicated to Juno wherein mothers were usually presented with gifts. It is indeed interesting to note that even in the hoary past mothers were put on a high pedestal that accorded them with such respect and admiration.
Today, celebrations on mother's day have become extremely popular with people attempting to make the day extra special for their dear moms. In fact, its popularity can be gauged from the fact that according to the 'National Restaurant Association', the most popular day of the year to dine out at a restaurant in the United States is mothers' day, leaving behind even 'Valentine's Day'! Mother's day, as we know it today, did not come to pass out of the blue. Attempts to officially recognize mother's day began in 1870 when Julia Ward Howe wrote the mother's day Proclamation. Her attempt to get formal recognition of a mother's day fell through only to come back with a bang with the unstinted efforts of Anna M. Jarvis. Beginning 1908 Anna Jarvis campaigned hard to create an official mother's day in memory of her mother. Her efforts were finally brought to fruition in 1914 when it was declared that the second Sunday in the month of May will mark a national observance of mother's day. As mothers play an indispensable role in almost every person's life, countless poems have been written on them. 'Mothers Are The Sweetest' is a poem that in simple yet eloquent terms describes the beauty of mothers.
Here are the lyrics of the heart touching poem for mothers titled "Mother's Are The Sweetest" by Nick Gordon.
Mother's Are The Sweetest
Our mother is the sweetest and
Most delicate of all.
She knows more of paradise
Than angels can recall.
She's not only beautiful
But passionately young,
Playful as a kid, yet wise
As one who has lived long.
Her love is like the rush of life,
A bubbling, laughing spring
That runs through all like liquid light
And makes the mountains sing.
And makes the meadows turn to flower
And trees to choicest fruit.
She is at once the field and bower
In which our hearts take root.
She is at once the sea and shore,
Our freedom and our past.
With her we launch our daring ships
Yet keep the things that last.
