- Leland Stanford, like many of his contemporaries, grew up in New York and then moved to the west after the gold rush and made his fortune in railroads.
- He and his wife Jane had a son who died at the age of fifteen from typhoid. At that time, the Stanfords decided that since they couldn't do anything for their child, the children of California will be their children and contemplated to do something good for the country's children.
